Pattern Mixing: Adding Personality While Designing Your Space

Pattern mixing can be a fantastic idea when it comes to designing your space. Whether you're working in a cozy corner or a spacious room, incorporating a variety of prints can bring depth, character, and a unique touch to your project. Not only does this technique enhance the overall design, but it also helps tie different elements of the room together.

People often ask us about the "rules" for choosing the perfect combination of fabric patterns and colors for a room. Our first response? There are no strict rules! However, there are some general principles that can guide your choices toward an amazing outcome.

Pattern Principles:

1. Balance is Key

When it comes to patterns, balance is your best friend. Finding the right distribution and placement of eye-catching prints matters. Remember the old saying, "Too much of a good thing"? It holds true here. You don't want your fabric choices to overwhelm the senses; instead, aim to highlight specific details and set the room's mood.

2. Starting with a Focal Fabric

Begin your design journey with one central fabric that captures your attention. From there, build around this choice by adding smaller patterns in colors that coordinate, complement, or stay neutral.

3. Creating a Harmonious Palette

To ensure your color palette is pleasing, consider selecting at least one of each of the following types of prints:

  • Floral, paisley, or ikat

  • Geometric

  • Stripe

  • Solid

Don't dismiss solids – they can be just as impactful as vibrant prints. Luxurious velvets, delicate linens, or textured textiles add depth to a room's design.

4. Playing with Scale

When it comes to pattern size, remember to mix it up. Typically, your focal fabric will be the largest in scale, drawing attention to where it matters most. Around this focal point, introduce smaller scale patterns. For instance, if you have a bold botanical pattern, pair it with a narrower stripe or a geometric design with a small pattern repeat. A balance between large and small patterns prevents overwhelm and keeps the room focused.

Pattern mixing is a creative way to infuse your space with personality and character. Remember that while there are no strict rules, these tips can guide you toward a beautifully balanced design. So go ahead, embrace the art of pattern mixing, and create a space that's uniquely yours!
